Places of Peace

There are two places where I can go and feel peace wash over me like a gentle Vermont stream. The first is an empty pew at St. Agnes just before a weekday Mass. The second a bench by Preston’s dock, looking out over the wharf and boats to Peconic Bay.

Most of the time, my mind drives my existence–busy thinking, questioning and trying to understand the “why” of people and events around me. My mind is so busy engaging the world, the rest of my body struggles to keep up and feel the world around it…But in these two places, my mind quiets down, and my senses have time to delight in the small moments and little flickers of activity surrounding me: the light shining through the stained glass over the altar, a diving cormorant, a ship’s pennant whipping in the breeze. I feel God in these small moments, and that feeling never fails to make me feel whole, happy, and at peace.
