The Why

The interesting question for me–which no one seems to be asking or speculating about–is WHY Archbishop Stanislaw Wielgus was an informer for the secret police for so many years in Communist Poland? Allegations that Wielgus was involved with the secret police were first raised in a Polish weekly December 20. At first he denied them; and then acknowledged he did sign an agreement in 1978 promising to cooperate in exchange for permission to leave Poland to study in West Germany.

Archbishop Wielgus resigned as Archbishop of Warsaw at the mass in which he was to have been installed. The Vatican accepted his resignation.

He was blackmailed for some reason; if so, what is the real reason? Who or what did he inform about to the secret police? Why did the Vatican consider his authority “so compromised” that they didn’t want him to be installed?

Will crusading Polish journalists continue to pursue the story; or will they be squashed by the government of president Lech Kaczysnki, who seeks to strengthen Poland’s traditional Catholic values?
