Famous Convert

Posted by Censor Librorum on Sep 26, 2007 | Categories: Lesbian in a Catholic Sort of Way

Until I read a review of the new book, Two Lives, about Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, I always thought they were two Jewish lesbians. I was correct–up to a point. Alice B. Toklas converted to Catholicism in 1957 when she was 80. Apparently one of the anxieties of her final years (she died 10 years later in 1967) was that when she got to Heaven she would find Gertrude stuck in Limbo. But Alice continued to hope they would ultimately be reunited and spend eternity together.
