Let’s Go, Devils!

Baseball season ended a little early for this Mets fan. But, hockey season has begun, and that means watching the N.J. Devils. Now that I live on Long Island, I suppose I should start rooting for the Islanders, but I just can’t get excited about them.

When we lived in Brooklyn it was easier to get over to the Meadowlands to see the Devils play. Now, I’ll probably have to settle for a game at Nassau Coliseum. Of course, when I stride in wearing my Claude Lemieux #22 jersey, I’ll probably have to duck to avoid being hit by a Bud, a cheesey nachos wrapper or worse.

It was great being a Devils fan during their Stanley Cup glory years. They still have the great Brodeur, and Brian Gionta promises to be a very exciting player, but I miss the old timers–Stephane Richer, Scott Stevens, John MacLean, Bruce Driver, Kenny Daneyko, Chris Terreri, and, of course, Lemieux.

Continental Area would rock–all these New Jerseyans–many of them Catholic (after all, it’s a tough sport)–the team, the coaches, the management, practically all Catholic–screaming “Let’s go, Devils! Let’s go, Devils!”

I have one thing in common with my Islander fan son, Robert: we both hate the Rangers and always will.
