Wearing Rosaries?

I was waiting on the corner of 20th and 8th Avenue to have lunch with a friend yesterday. I big guy with deadlocks goes by wearing…a rosary. A blue..plastic..rosary.

Two minutes later, a 20-something girl goes by wearing a red plastic rosary.

My friend shows up, and we start talking about his upcoming vacation to Sicily, but half my brain is thinking about all the people wearing rosaries that I’m starting to see. On Saturday a woman who sat down in the pew with Lori and me was wearing a white plastic rosary. She didn’t take it off to pray, just wore it.

Before this year, the only person I ever saw wearing a rosary was one utterly devout guy in Dignity that (I thought) bordered on nut-dom. He used it to pray during Mass and wore it up for Communion. But that was almost 30 years ago. I hadn’t seen anyone wearing a rosary since then until now.

Is there something going on that I don’t know? The only time I would ever wear a rosary would be if I was going to Transylvania on Walpurgis Night.

Is this rosary-wearing a statement by the ultra-devout or simply the new fashion? I checked, and Dontrelle Willis of the Marlins wears one. So does Lindsey Lohan and any number of other celebrities.

Are plastic rosaries replacing the five-inch gold crosses and red Kabbalah bracelets as the “must-have” accessory?
